עמוד הוויקי הבא מספק פרטים נוספים על הכלי: Administration_pages#Check_for_errors

[Administration > Batch update] Although, as the name describes, this was designed as a basic tool to update a large batch of records at one time, correcting a handful of known issues, it can also be used in a couple of ways to keep your data up to date and complete. Do exercise great caution as this tool can change lots of records in batch mode and there is no UNDO.
Be sure to make a backup of your data before using Batch Update.

Not an obvious tool for helping to keep data up-to-date, but one I find incredibly helpful. I use it to provide me with a regular list of individuals I need to to do further research on. I use this tool once every month. For each person that it shows as needing to have a death recorded, instead of just saying “Update” which will just add a “Y” (yes) against the DEATH I use it as a reminder to research the person, and try to record their true date of death. After all, there are very few people still alive after 120 years, so there must be a record of their death somewhere!

[Administration > Google Maps™ > Place check] This tool was designed to help keep your map coordinates synchronised with your family tree places, by comparing the data available in each of the two separate tables where that data is stored. It will simply tell you what places need reviewing, which might involve correcting the spelling of a place in your tree; adding a place to the maps table, or just adding map coordinates to a place. Any of these can be done by following the links provided in the list of differences. If you use the Google Maps™ module, it is vitally important to use this tool regularly, as the list of differences can very quickly become un-manageable otherwise.

[Main menu > Lists > Places] This is another useful tool to check regularly, and this applies whether you use the Google Maps™ module or not. A tidy list (or hierarchy) of places makes using webtrees a far more pleasant experience both for you and your visitors. I simply review each level briefly, to ensure no places have been entered that miss a level, or have been spelled incorrectly. Done regularly, such errors are very easily spotted. Using the “Show All Places in a List” option below the Top Level list is a great way of easily spotting misspellings and out-of-order places.

[Main menu > Charts > Statistics] Much like the Batch update tools, this is a great way to identify individuals or families where either more research should be done, or where recorded information might not be correct. I look at items like these, though of course, hopefully you have nothing like this in your tree (have you checked?):

  • Greatest age at death: did Great Aunt Elizabeth really live to 125, or is there a mis-typing in that data?
  • Oldest living people: Is Frederick Smith really still alive at 118?
  • Age in year of marriage, Youngest Male – 9 Years: is it really correct that this person married at age 9?
  • Age at birth of child – did this man / woman really have their first child at age 10, or age 107?
  • Age difference, Age Between Siblings – I see a brother and sister with 103 years age difference! Surely not 🙂 (Note: this one was easily fixed. The brother’s birth had been typed as 1956, instead of 1856!).

[Main menu > Lists > Individuals or Families etc] All of these list pages have a range of different sorting and filtering opportunities. Combinations of those can be very valuable in finding errors and omissions. For individuals they can help find people with no gender (or even incorrect gender if you sort by first name), the earliest person in a tree (“Roots”), the final people in a tree (“Leaves”), and many more possibilities.

I use this both for general interest, and as another tool to guide my research towards individuals that I need to find more answers about. Its a complex list, but well worth while:

  • Go to the Individual lists page.
Birth.png
  • Select the family name by first clicking on the initial letter, then selecting the name from the list.
  • Decide if you want to include female spouses who have this name by marriage only by clicking on “Include [or Exclude] individuals with ‘xxxxxxx’ as a married name”.
  • Click the “Alive” filter button.
  • Click in header title “Birth” (see image) twice, to sort the records into birth date order with the earliest at the top.

The very first person on the list now is the oldest living person with that family name, IF they really are still alive. So now you can do the research to confirm or correct that.
